About
Kabu Research covers Japanese small-cap equities — the part of the market where English-language coverage is thin and the filings are Japanese-first. Out here, a serious capital-return program and a marketing slide can look identical in English. Telling them apart is the work.
The engine
Kabu is a research platform first, and this is the flagship. It reads Japanese filings at scale, narrows the universe with deterministic screens, assembles the evidence behind each name, runs the analyst review, and keeps the citation trail back to the original document. Everything published on the Substack is produced here.

Company research-stack pages: the filings, the timely disclosures, the analyst read, and the fair-value distribution — each tied to its source.
A private marker on any ticker and controlled downloads of the underlying evidence. Your filters and markers are yours — research tools, not calls from us.
The publication
The Substack is the editorial layer of the platform — where the work becomes a portfolio you can read: a live portfolio of fifteen to twenty-five Japan-listed holdings built one name at a time, monthly deep dives on the names that earn a position, quarterly rebalance notes, and ad-hoc updates when an event inside the book requires one. Every holding traces back to a research-stack page here.
What we actually do
The work is not finding Japanese companies with buybacks. Every fund covering Japan reads the same exchange disclosures; the marginal disclosure no longer differentiates. The work is separating durable shareholder-return reform from compliance theater — at scale, with a citation trail back to the exact filing that justifies the call.
The pipeline is the same on every name: universe → evidence packet → two independent analyst seats → deterministic gates → final human review. We wrote it up in full in our methodology — free to read.
How it's structured
Enough is free to judge the work before you pay anything. The platform includes the publication in full — the flagship and the work it produces, together.
